Hey All,
Apparently, God likes the losers. Last week in our Pastor-led Bible
study, Pastor Marty led us through the calling of the first disciples.
So far, we have a few fishermen and a tax collector. Fishermen, in
Christ's day, worked at night. And think about what they must have
smelled like! Tax collectors were hated by the Jews because they
worked for the Roman government--the oppressor--and because they took
more than they needed from their own people. I'd always assumed that
when the Bible talked about Jesus hanging out with "tax collectors and
sinners," they really weren't all that bad. A little petty theft here
and there, maybe smelling a bit like dead fish, but nothing serious.
But these people were at the very bottom of the social ladder. They
were "sinners," who desperately needed a Savior. It makes us think
twice before we ignore the outcasts--the drunks, the druggies,
whatever--of our own day. Jesus came for those who admitted they
needed help. He hung out with them. He loved them.
So, here's what's going on this week at refuge:
Monday, Oct. 23: Lounge open from 6:00-10:00
Tuesday, Oct. 24: Pastor-Led Bible study on Luke at 9:00
Wednesday, Oct. 25: Discussion group (on Halloween??? Maybe???) at 9:00
Thursday, Oct. 26: Women's Bible Study at 7:00. This week is our
social event, so meet at the church at 7:00 as usual, and we'll be
going to an UNDISCLOSED LOCATION from there. A location with great
food, though:-)
Friday, Oct. 27: HALLOWEEN PARTY!!!!!!!!! At 7:00, at the church. Come
in costume! Best costume wins a prize. Come on, you know you want to.
We're all going to look like dorks together, after all.
That's all for now. God Bless, and have a wonderful week.
Nikki
