Hey All,
Here's a prayer that has meant a lot to me. It's by St. Thomas Aquinas, a
medieval theologian.
Give me, O Lord God, a watchful heart which no vain thoughts can distract
from you.
Give me a generous heart which no unworthy affection can draw downward.
Give me an upright heart which no dishonorable intention can lead away from
you.
Give me a firm heart which no hardship can crush.
Give me a free heart which no unruly emotion can claim for its own;
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The language is difficult, but the message is powerful. We ask God to take
away our hardships and to give us what we want, but we often forget to ask
Him to change our hearts. And ultimately, that's what we need most of all--a
change of heart. So ask Him. Feeling impatient? Grumpy? Irritated at
your roommate? Angry with your friend? Proud, maybe? Ask God to change the
things that He sees need changing. He will.
So, on to business! Here's what's happening this week at Refuge:
Monday, Oct. 30: Lounge open from 6:00-10:00
Tuesday, Oct. 31: Pastor-led Bible study on the book of Luke at 9:00
Wednesdy, Nov. 1: Discussion group at 9:00. I'm not sure of the topic, but
it will be good. It always is!
Thursday, Nov. 2: Women's Bible study. Meet at the church at 7:00, and we'll
head to an UNDISCLOSED location from there.
Saturday, Nov. 4: We're helping out in a benefit for the family of John
Meyers, a young member of the community who tragically passed away
recently. The benefit is to help his family with costs they're facing.
Meet at the church at 4:00, and we'll head over to the Barsema Alumni Center
(I think) from there to help with behind-the-scenes cleanup and such. If
you'd like to make it to some part of this but can't do all, that's
definitely not a problem.
Sunday, Nov. 5: worship at 8:00 and 10:30, with a pancake breakfast
following the 10:30 service. This Sunday, O'Leary's Irish Pub (on Lincoln
Highway in downtown DeKalb) is donating a percentage of their sales back to
Refuge. So go to the Irish Pub, take friends and family, and tell them
you're from Refuge! (If you don't make it this Sunday, go some other time.
O'Leary's has amazing chicken strips!)
That's all for now. God Bless, and try to get some sleep! This semester
WILL end, eventually!
Nikki
